Birth Dance

BirthDance combines the fluid, sensual, and artistic movements of oriental dance with breath awareness and pelvic floor exercises to create a complete and enjoyable childbirth preparation program for pregnant women. Little known to many people today, the actual origin of oriental dance is in pregnancy, labor, and birth. The dance brings you into awareness of your body, most especially your pelvis, and can deepen your relationship with your growing baby. BirthDance strengthens and tones your whole body while you gently turn you pelvis and rock your baby in one of the oldest known dance forms. Each ancient movement echoes the body's own movements during childbirth, and therefore makes it the perfect prenatal exercise.

BirthDance is an 8 week series, which begins with the most basic movements, such as hip circles, and progress to more challenging ones, including scarf dancing. Breath awareness, visualization, and pelvic floor strengthening are practiced during each lesson. The purpose of all of the exercises is increased focus, flexibility, and fluidity of movement in harmony with the miraculous changes taking place in your body. Absolutely no previous dance experience is necessary.

It increases flexibility and mobility in all joints, especially those involved in birthing, thus easing labor. By rotating your pelvis, back pain is reduced. As their mothers dance and open their pelvises, babies more easily find a correct position, reducing the likelihood of prolonged labor. Done during labor, BirthDance has been shown to decrease the perception of pain and ease the process of labor and delivery. Postpartum recovery is supported by strengthening pelvic floor and abdominal muscles.

Most importantly, BirthDance is fun!
