Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy is a time of great physical and emotional change. As your body is being molded into a vessel for new life, your thoughts and emotions may swing widely between hope, despair; apathy, excitement; doubt and confidence. Our busy lives are filled with many conflicting messages, and sorting out your feelings about pregnancy, birth and parenthood may prove challenging. Pregnancy massage focuses on the special needs of the mother to be, providing touch which nurtures the mother's physiological and psychological well being. Massage provides much needed quiet time for reflection on your baby, your new role as mother, and your changing relationships with your partner, family and friends. Receiving massage during pregnancy can alleviate many of the physical discomforts associated with the dramatic growth and change taking place in the your body, while soothing emotional stress and anxiety.

During pregnancy, therapeutic massage can:

Massage During Labor

Receiving mindful touch during birth can help the laboring woman remain focused and aware throughout the birth. Massage can help ease labor pains, promote labor function, and encourage optimal positioning of the baby. Massage performed by a loved one or trained professional also provides companionship to the mother, easing her fears and emotional tension. For some birth companions, knowledge of massage techniques empowers them to be more involved in the labor and remain present themselves throughout the birth. For fathers, massage is a beautiful way to support and connect with mother and baby during this powerful event.

I offer two forms of bodywork to meet your needs:

bullet Swedish Massage:
Swedish massage is done with oil while supported in a side-lying position on a massage table. This form of massage is very soothing and relaxing-many women fall asleep! It is very helpful for relieving muscle tension, increasing circulation, and reducing edema.

bullet Shiatsu Massage:
Shiatsu massage is done fully clothed while supprted in a side-lying position on a padded floor. Gentle stretching and work along energy lines of the body help to increase energy, mobility and circulation and to reduce joint discomfort.

Your massage needs change as your body grows and changes. Full body massage is not recommended before the 12th week of pregnancy, as your body is still adjusting to the big job of growing new life. After the third month, you may recieve massage as often as you like. As long as you are experiencing a healthy pregnancy, massage has no harmful side-effects. However, if you are ill or are experiencing any problems with your pregnancy, you should talk with your caregiver before receiving massage.
