Bellycasting
What is Bellycasting? Bellycasting is a method of preserving your pregnant form, celebrating your pregnancy, and honoring your body. I learned about bellycasting from Francine Krause in Sebastopol, California who pioneered this artistic method 20 years ago, and it has grown in popularity since. I use medical grade plaster rolls and quality art supplies to help you to create a lasting memory of your pregnancy. How is it done? Bellycasting may be done in your own home or in my office, privately or as part of a blessingway ceremony, and with or without the help of your partner or other loved one. It is recommended that the casting be done completely nude, as any underwear or other clothing will show through the plaster, and the plaster itself may be difficult to remove from clothing. However, it is possible to cast over underwear protected by plastic wrap if this is preferable to you. I like to light candles, play music, use aromatherapy oils and generally help to create a spiritual, celebratory mood for creating belly casts. Especially if the bellycast is being created as part of a blessingway or other ritual, it becomes an unforgettable experience for the mother and all those participating in this rite of passage. A generous amount of oil will be applied to your body to protect your hair and skin from the plaster, and plastic wrap is used to protect any clothing or pubic hair. You will be sitting, semi-reclining, or lying down for the duration of the casting process, which takes approximately one hour. The cast itself dries quickly and can be removed almost immediately after completion, though it should dry another 48 hours before the application of any paint or decoration. Any stray plaster comes off of your skin easily in the shower.
How long does the process take? The entire process, from start to finish, including clean up, takes approximately 90 minutes. What do I do with my bellycast once it is finished? Once your bellycast is dry, I recommend that it be sanded to remove any rough edges, trimmed to your taste and then painted with gesso, a high quality artist-grade base paint which will cover most plaster lines, protect your bellycast from dirt and which will not yellow over time. Once you or I have created the gesso base-coat, you may display the bellycast as is, paint it, or decorate it as you desire. Many mothers choose to hang their bellycasts in their child's room, and most children delight in having a constant reminder of how small they once were and how they came to be. As long as it is treated as a work of art, your bellycast will survive to serve as a reminder of your pregnancy, the amazing power of your body and your passage into motherhood. |
