Breastfeeding Support

Due to studies undertaken over the past 30 years, we are realizing more and more the amazing qualities of breastmilk and its benefits for our children. Most countries now have programs which emphasize the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life. Countries like Norway have been extremely successful in their support of breastfeeding mothers, with breastfeeding rates rising from 20% in 1970 to 99% of mothers breastfeeding at hospital discharge and 80% still breastfeeding at 6 months in 2009. It was the bold campaign of training and support for mothers instituted by Norway's far-thinking prime minister which effected this great change.

Many women believe that because breastfeeding is natural, it must therefore be simple. In some cases, this is true. However, in cultures following highly medicalized birth protocols, or in which breastfeeding has effectively skipped a generation or two, both the interruption of the natural physiological processes and lack of knowledge and support may be working against the mother. Positive guidance from a trained professional can make all the difference between breastfeeding successfully and feeling forced to give up unnecessarily.

As a trained breastfeeding counselor working toward my IBCLC (International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants) certification, I can provide group and individual support to breastfeeding women from birth to weaning.
