What is a Doula?

The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to describe a trained and experienced professional who provides physical, emotional and informational support to the mother and her family before, during and after birth.

Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and breastfeed more easily and families have an easier transition postpartum.

How do doulas accomplish all this?

As a doula, I :

bullet Recognize birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life.

bullet Understand the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor.

bullet Assist the woman and her family in preparing for birth and creating their birth plan, as well as coping with unexpected but necessary changes to the birth plan.

bullet Stay with the woman throughout labor.

bullet Provide emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint while also helping the family get the information they need to make an informed decision.

bullet Facilitate communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers.

bullet Perceive my role as nurturing and protecting the mother's memory of her birth experence.

bullet Provide the space and support for the mother's partner to participate at his own level of comfort, acknowledging the birth as a rite of passage for both mother and father.

bullet Support the mother and family in postpartum adjustment through postpartum planning, nutritional and emotional counceling, physical recovery and breastfeeding support.
